Welcoming Congregation Program

In June 2006 Westwood became certified as a Welcoming Congregation, which means we have completed the Welcoming Congregation curriculum from the Unitarian Universalist Association and have passed a congregational vote to affirm that we welcome the membership and active participation of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and/or transgender people.

For more information about the Welcoming Congregation program, see the Canadian Unitarian Council webpage on the Welcoming Congregations Program

Ongoing Affirmation

Westwood has undertaken activities such as worship services and workshops to increase our understanding of the BGLTQ community and to make the congregation a welcoming place. Unitarians have long supported the BGLTQ community and their fight for equal human rights. Historically, the church has provided celebrations of union for many years before gay marriage was a possibility.

Every year, Westwood takes part in Edmonton’s Pride Parade. On Saturday, June 13th 2009, we carried one piece – 125 feet – of the Pride Rainbow Project banner.

Rev. Wendy McNiven’s Pride parade sermon “Pride and Prejudice” was recorded at Westwood on June 15, 2008.

Westwood supports Camp fYrefly youth camp.
