Dear Westwood Members and Friends,
A few years ago, Westwood benefitted from the donation of “new to us” chairs which, were an improvement on the previous well-worn chairs, and came at no charge. This was a great help in delaying the inevitable purchase of new chairs. However, after a long life in the ATA cafeteria and a few years with us, it seems these chairs have reached their end. Without debating questions of comfort and cleanliness, the disintegrating foam is raising both aesthetic and health concerns.
The Board has taken these concerns, raised by our members, very seriously and therefore a volunteer task group was formed. The task group, headed by Lorian Kennedy, researched a variety of options and consulted with the Saskatoon Unitarians. Saskatoon undertook an extensive research into chairs before replacing theirs a few years ago. The task group also performed a “sitting” test on proposed replacement chairs before making their recommendation to the Board. We are very fortunate to have Lorian, a retired Occupational Therapist, as a member of this task group.
At the January 4 meeting the Board passed a motion to order 100 new chairs, 10 of which will have arms. We will also order a dolly for assisting with stacking and moving. The new chairs are the same as the ones currently in use at Spirit West United Church here in Edmonton, as well as Saskatoon Unitarian and Toronto First Unitarian. The committee found an Alberta supplier which reduces shipping costs. We anticipate arrival in 4-6 weeks.
Although initial funding for this expense will come from our building reserve fund, we are inviting all members and friends of Westwood to “adopt a chair” or better still, “adopt a row”. A $50 CDN, tax deductible donation to Westwood will cover the cost of one chair. A $300 donation will provide a row of 6 chairs. Please mark your donation as “chair fund” to avoid confusion with regular pledges. Donations by e-transfer can be accepted at email@example.com
The Board sees this as an investment in our future, an opportunity to show our collective pride and ownership in our community space. It will make Westwood more comfortable for all.
Please direct any questions or concerns to firstname.lastname@example.org
Best wishes to all for the New Year,
President, Westwood Unitarian Congregation
