The Canadian Blood Serves is reaching out to churches in the south central Edmonton area in hopes to garner support during July and August at our main blood donor clinic (located next door to the University of Alberta Hospital).
You may have heard in the media recently that the need for blood is at a critical level in Canada currently – at our main blood donor clinic in Edmonton in July alone, we have over 2,600 open appointments that need to be filled. Summer is a particularly tough time to keep up with hospital demand, as our regular donors are often busy doing other activities, and blood donation is not top of mind. Unfortunately, the need for blood doesn’t take a summer vacation, as cancer patients, accident victims, and people with blood disorders rely on blood transfusions every day, even during the summer.
If Westwood Unitarian was able to organize a group of 3-8 people interested in donating blood, I would be happy to book a group of appointments for you at our main blood donor clinic (located at 8249 114 street). Our hours are as follows:
Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 1:00 pm & 3:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Saturday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm
We do also offer a shuttle service to and from our clinic for groups of 3-8 donors.
To book a group donation, all we need to know is what date you would like the appointments, what time you would like the appointments to start at, and how many appointments you would like. Please keep in mind that the entire donation process (registration, screening, donation, refreshments) takes about 1 – 1.25 hours. Once I have this information, I will block off the spots for you.
We also encourage people to book individual blood donation appointments, and they can do so at www.blood.ca or by downloading the GiveBlood app. Any eligibility questions can be answered here, or by calling 1-888-2DONATE. or contacting me directly.
