In Hebrew Shmita means “Shabbat of Shabbats” and is the 7th year in a 7 year cycle in which the land is left to rest from agriculture and debts are forgiven. Lisa and Ilara have been attending the Temple Beth Ora Shmita Study Group for the past year and are excited to share some of what they have learned ecologically, economically, and spiritually from this experience!

Topic: Supporting the Healing and Resurgence of Indigenous Nations through Birth Work

The ongoing identification of hundreds of unmarked children’s graves on former Indian Residential School sites across what is now called Canada has brought renewed attention to the Indigenous experience of intergenerational trauma caused by the policies, processes and practices of colonialism. Equally as important as the truth of intergenerational trauma is the power of intergenerational resilience and strength that lives in our Indigenous communities. Join Cultural Birth Helper & Indigenous Birth of Alberta Aunty, Lori Calkins, for a conversation about supporting the healing and resurgence of Indigenous nations through birthwork. She will share about her work providing support for Indigenous families in and around their birthing time from an Indigenous worldview.

There is an opportunity for ‘social time’ in break-out rooms following the service – a time to connect with friends old and new.

Topic: TOGETHER WE GIVE THANKS

The Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address is a beautiful pledge of gratitude to the natural world and all her peoples which is spoken as a deep vow at the beginning of school days, meetings, and ceremonies within multiple Indigenous Nations in the Great Lakes area. The Elders of the region consider it a gift to the world; this morning we receive their gift and all those spoken within the Address in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

There is an opportunity for ‘social time’ in break-out rooms following the service – a time to connect with friends old and new.

Topic: WHOSE ARE WE?

As we reflect on the proposed 8th Principle – Individual and communal action that accountably dismantles racism and other oppressions in ourselves and in our institutions – the word “accountably” figures prominently. What might this mean?
