From the Minister’s Study…

Rev. Anne
May 2018: LOVING AFFECTION

Beautiful Westwood,

What a month it was in Apri

Thank you for all the ways that you showed up, participated, encouraged & appreciated our efforts this past month. We had so many good things happening, and it was a delight to see them all come together so beautifully.

What a powerful experience, to pack the house for Bob Joseph’s visit! And then to have such a large ‘western region’ choir for the next Sunday service with Rev. Jason Shelton leading us in UU wisdom & song! It was a bounty of riches, for sure.

As we head into May, now, with all the hustle and bustle of Annual Meetings (Westwood, the UU Ministers of Canada, and the Canadian Unitarian Council) – let’s take a moment to pause and breathe in the beautiful warming spring air … to relax a moment in the sunshine … and to sit in the satisfaction of a job well done.

10 years we have been doing this together. 10 years we have dreamed and imagined. And this year, we have been bringing these dreams to fruition. Thank you for your love and enthusiasm – your willingness to work together for what we know to be meaningful and true. Collectively, we are blessed with the treasure of beloved community.

In love and gratitude,

Rev Anne

Sounding Board Notes- April 2018

Fun and interesting notes from our April 4, 2018 Board meeting
  • Sunday, May 27th is our Annual General Meeting following the service. This is a special one – 10 years since Rev. Anne became our minister! Celebration is in order! Watch for the notice and plan to attend. Everyone is welcome for the celebration and meeting but only members may vote. Not sure if you are a member? Please check with Linda, membership@westwoodunitarian.ca
  • The Stewardship campaign Strengthening Our Interdependent Web is going well. We have had wonderful testimonials from Heather, Marj, Kevin and Brenda. We are heartened that so many people have sent in their pledges and we expect to come close to our goal. We have not heard from a few people so will be contacting them by April 15 so that we can finalize our budget proposal for the Annual General Meeting. Thanks for your generosity!
  • PRIDE. Pam and Richard, who won the auction bid to choose a sermon topic, have chosen a Pride based theme Nurturing Youth which Rev. Anne will be delivering on May 13. The 2018 Pride service Why We March will be on June 3. We were pleased that both services are now posted on the Pride Web Calendar and PRIDE GUIDE.
  • U of A Campus Ministry. Rev. Anne will be resigning her role in Campus Ministry at the end of this campus year to use her time more effectively in other areas.
  • Carl Ulrich is hosting our Westwood online participation in the CUC Annual General Meeting which is taking place in Hamilton on May 18th, 2018. Everyone is welcome to attend from 11 AM to 2 PM. Carl and Leigh Bornn are our appointed delegates who may vote on behalf of our congregation.
  • The Endowment Committee submitted two motions to the Board regarding this year’s funding applications. These were approved and will be announced at our AGM on May 27th.
  • The Board is exploring modest renovations to provide an accessible washroom on our main level. We are seeking more detailed information before we know if this will be feasible.
  • The Board accepted with regrets the change in status from Member to Friend of Grant Harlton.
  • Nomination season is here again! Fortunately four Board members (President, Vice President,
  • Secretary and Treasurer) have one more year in their terms so we do not need to fill those this year but we will be looking for keen individuals to join our happy crew as Trustees. We also have openings for new elected members for the Endowment and Financial Review Committees. There are also other opportunities for people to deepen their relationships within Westwood in Membership, Worship, Children and Youth, the Committee on Shared Ministry, etc. Contact Brenda Jackson for more information, board@westwooduntarian.ca

The Unitarian Universalist (U/U) story told in French

Did you know that there are about 220 million people speaking French?  Did you know that 115 million of them live in Africa and more than 7 million in Canada? Did you know that French is one of the 6 languages through which ideas are spread in the world today?
Imagine the message and values you care about shared in French. You do not have to imagine. “La Communauté Sans Frontières, Unitarienne /Universaliste” is a Ministry venture that seeks to serve the French speaking community in Saskatoon, in Canada and the world!

The reality is that U/Uism is packaged in English and its culture. When one looks up Unitarianism or Unitarian Universalism, everything that comes up is in English and a little bit in Spanish and some pieces in French.  The materials available in French do not give enough material for people to understand and connect.

The U/U faith has a lot to offer to the world.  I am here to tell that story. When I was in prison, two particular members of my congregation in Bujumbura kept me informed about the efforts to get me out of jail.  They would say, 918 people have signed the petition so far or another letter was sent to the embassy today or someone from the Philippines inquired about your situation and so on.  Every day at 6PM, everyone would go home and I would stay alone in a dark locked room.  I would think about many things, including the risks of not getting out alive. I would also think about all the positive energy being sent my way and what I share with the people who were fighting my fight.  Like me, they valued freedom of speech, the democratic processes in our congregations and institutions, the worth and dignity of every person. We shared values and we shared our humanity.  The flaming Chalice  kept coming to my mind as a symbol of what we share.  Care for others, sacrifice for others including those we do not know, have not met and probably will never meet.  The values we stand for can and do save lives. It did in the past, it does today and will do in the future. If my life could be used to tell that story of love, of resistance, of care, of speaking truth to power, it would be worth doing and that is the story I want to tell to as many people as possible, in as many languages as possible and this time in French. U/Usm represents the worldview that supports those values and a spirituality that in the words of William R. Murry has to do with “genuineness, depth and devotion to values other than my own self-interest”.

U/Um is a faith that has been transformative for many people who have been in contact with it and embraced the values that the faith promotes.
