After a brief summer break, Westwood’s Board of Trustees met in person on Monday, August 24 at Dean’s place.

Gratitude and Joy

  • The board celebrated Langston Theodore, child of Katie and Rick.  His Naming and Dedication Ceremony was presided over by our Lay Chaplain, Jacqueline, during one of the summer’s Serendipity circles.  Welcome Langston!

  • Ingathering & Water Communion – the first ‘regular’ Sunday gathering after Summer Serendipity circles will be on September 13.  Everyone is invited to bring water (real or symbolic) and share a reflection on the summer that has been.  Second-Sunday Potluck will follow.

  • During Leadership Hour, Rebecca led an exercise guided by her reading of Dare to Lead by Brené Brown. Our goal was to highlight the shared values that will guide us as we make decisions about where to allocate our Time, Talent and Treasure.

  • Pride Parade – Westwoodians and UCE-ers marched together at the recent Pride Parade.  We have some new signs/banners which made their debuts at this march.  We look forward to more opportunities to use them!

Business

  • Painting & Signage – the wet summer has delayed exterior repainting at Westwood, and as a result, the sign has had to wait as well.  Update – the painters have been hard at work this week!

  • FRC recommendations – the Board reviewed the main recommendations of the Financial Review Committee and determined that we have fulfilled those recommendations.

Community Events

  • Greater Edmonton Alliance Civic Academy – The Greater Edmonton Alliance for the Common Good is hosting a series of community events called “Civic Academies” across Edmonton this September, and everyone is welcome to attend. Westwood is specifically involved in the “South Central” Academy on Sept 20. The specific time and date is to be announced soon. (It turns out Westwood is too small to hold all of the people we anticipate coming to the followup sessions.)

At these gatherings, we’ll be talking about the upcoming Referendum and, importantly, hearing directly from people whose lives and communities could be affected by the outcome. These conversations are an opportunity to listen, learn, ask questions, and better understand what is at stake for people across our city and province.

But this is about more than the Referendum itself. It is an opportunity to build understanding, strengthen relationships, and build the community power we need to work together on the issues that affect our lives.

There are several events happening in different parts of Edmonton throughout September, so if you can’t make one, there are other opportunities to participate.

You can see the full list of events and RSVP to whichever one works best for you here.

We hope you’ll consider joining us!

  • Makers Market – Saturday, September 19, 3- 8 pm.  Craft fair – come on by and take a look at what’s on offer.  You can also wander over to the Parkallen Community League for their music festival

  • Games Night – Games Night has been cancelled for September..  If you have an idea or can provide the support for continuing this 4th-Friday activity (or even a new idea), please contact a board member.

Next meeting will be on Monday, September 14 at 6:30 (offsite).  If you would like to attend this meeting, please contact a board member for details.
