June 2026 Sounding Board

The Westwood Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, June 24 via Zoom.  Here are some of the highlights:

Thank Yous

  • Regular Sunday Morning Gatherings are done until the fall.  A huge ‘Thank You’ to the coordinating group (formerly “The Worship Committee”) for all their hard work to make Sunday gatherings spiritual, fun, interesting, thoughtful, and celebratory. Over the summer come for our circle Serendipity gatherings to experience togetherness with others and share inspiring discussions and togetherness with others.

  • A big “Thank You!” to everyone who volunteered their time at Westwood’s charity casino on June 16 & 17 and extra thanks to casino chair Brenda Jackson.  We had some people from UCE as well and were so grateful for their help.

  • Thank you and Congratulations to Leigh Bornn who has agreed to be the new Compassion Banker.  Pamela Bunge will be the back-up when Leigh is unavailable. Thanks again to Sara for her 12 years of capable compassion!

  • The heavy rains brought an unwelcome visitor to the Westwood basement in the form of lots of water.  Many thanks to our first responders – Mitch, Edda, Dawn, Margret and to Rebecca and Ivan for bringing in their dehumidifier.  You might notice that there are some temporary tarps at the back to divert water away from the building.  We are exploring permanent ways of mitigating water ingress.

Board

  • The incoming and outgoing boards joined together for a Kickstart weekend comprised of a social get-together but also the practical work of handing over roles and learning the ropes.

  • The board would like to set up an emergency contact list for Westwoodians on a voluntary basis.  Please keep an eye out for more information to come.

  • Board meetings for the next 12 months will be on the 2nd Monday of every month, with some exceptions – if you want to address the board at a meeting, please check the online calendar and let a board member know that you intend to attend.

Ideas Needed

  • The Canadian Unitarian Council has made congregations aware of the federal New Horizons for Seniors Program, which provides grants for organizations to create programs/events that engage and support seniors in the community.  The deadline for this year’s grant applications is on July 15, which is a bit too tight for Westwood to submit a prize-winning proposal.  However, this grant process happens every year, so if you’ve got a project in mind that you think Westwood and Westwoodians could get behind, please read the information in the link and then discuss with a board member.

Save the Dates

  • Summer Picnic Potluck will be on Saturday, August 29, 4 – 7 pm at Daryl and Margret’s.

  • Makers Market – Westwood will be running a craft fair again this year on Saturday, September 19th, running concurrently with Parkallen Community League’s annual music festival.  It will be open tentatively from 3 pm- 8 pm.
