Topic: Connecting Through Song — Music for the Spirit Series
Karen Porkka was our special guest speaker / musician for this installment of Westwood’s Music for the Spirit Series.
Karen is originally from southern Alberta, and has made Edmonton her home for the past 30+ years as a musician, vocalist, composer, improviser, music educator and choir director. During her artistic career, Karen and her groups have collaborated with artists from other disciplines including dance, theatre, film and visual arts. Community singing has become a focus of her musical offerings. She is the founder of the Vocal Improvisation Network of Edmonton (V.I.N.E.), as well as a non-auditioned community choir called the Soul Song Circle Singers, and continues the work of Bobby McFerrin by offering community improvised singing with a monthly gathering of Circle Singing.
